Breast Discomfort – Causes and Symptoms of Breast Discomfort

Breast discomfort is a normal part of being a woman. It is almost always not a sign of breast cancer. Breasts are mammary glands that are responsive to natural hormonal changes, especially fluctuations in estrogen, that occur at menstruation, menopause, and pregnancy. Hormonal changes can cause breasts to become hot, swollen, tender, and painful to the touch. “Breast discomfort is really common for women,” says Amanda Clark, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. “We see it a great deal during early pregnancy, with menstruation, and during early hormone therapy at menopause.”

Breast care specialists say that for most women, breast discomfort waxes and wanes with the menstrual cycle. Right before and during menstruation, higher-than-usual levels of the female hormone estrogen may cause one or both breasts to swell and become tender. Discomfort ranges from mild tenderness in some women to excruciating pain in others. (Taking oral contraceptives produces similar effects.) For many women monthly bouts of breast discomfort disappear with menopause–unless they undergo estrogen replacement therapy.

Causes Breast Discomfort

Cyclic breast pain appears to have a strong hormonal association. However, studies have not found a consistent hormonal abnormality. The fact that pain often decreases or disappears with pregnancy or menopause lends support to a hormonal association.

As hormonal imbalance is the most probable cause for breast tenderness during menstruation periods, the first step is to ensure your body has the support it needs to maintain good hormonal levels. The best way to go should be to start with a healthy nutrition and maybe follow a hormonal imbalance treatment such as alternative medicine.

Inverted nipple: Repeat occurrences of inverted nipple can lead to mammary duct ectasia. A newly inverted nipple also may obstruct milk ducts, causing inflammation and infection. A nipple that’s newly inverted also could be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, such as cancer.

Cyclic breast pain: Cyclic breast pain usually occurs in both breasts and involves the entire breast, particularly the upper, outer portions, extending into the underarm area. With cyclic breast pain, you may feel tenderness, swelling or lumpiness in addition to the pain. Women often describe this type of breast pain as dull, heavy or aching. It tends to be most intense during the week or two before your period and to ease up afterward. Cyclic breast pain is the most common type of breast pain, accounting for about two-thirds of cases.

The symptoms are grouped under a variety of different umbrella terms, including cyclical breast pain, cyclical mastalgia (which literally means breast pain), cyclical mastitis or fibrocystic breast disease. Despite their severity and the disruption they can cause, most breast problems are benign, not cancer. However, don’t be tempted to ignore them. Any unusual changes in your breasts should be reported to your doctor.

Forget the calendar. Like many women, you chart your menstrual cycle by consulting your breasts. A week or two before your period, your breasts start to hurt. Then once your period begins, the discomfort subsides…only to start up again next month.

No matter what a woman’s age, the discomfort seems to escalate with emotional stress or prolonged inactivity. Excessive amounts of salt, fat and caffeine also seem to have a negative impact.

Symptoms may range from mild to severe. Symptoms typically peak just before each menstrual period, and improve immediately after the menstrual period.

This can be likened to the way in which a minority of young women on oral contraceptives experience a worsening of acne. It should be emphasised that the way in which individual women metabolise hormones varies greatly
so this is not an important effect in all women.

Menopausal and peri-menopausal acne may improve simply by switching to oil-free moisturisers and cosmetics. Remnants of cleansing cream left on the skin can also block
sebaceous glands and encourage blackhead formation. Washing with a good mild soap will solve this problem.

Acne medication including antibiotics may be needed in severe cases of acne. Another option is anti-androgen treatment. This can be incorporated into an HRT regime by substituting cyproterone acetate forthe progestogen. Spironolactone can be used in women not on HRT. In peri-menopausal women still menstruating and still needing contraception, a solution is to use the oral contraceptive containing cyproterone acetate (Diane 35 ED) with the option of adding extra cyproterone acetate if the acne remains severe. A considerable amount of fine tuning
may be needed in individual cases and this requires careful medical supervision. A minority of women with cystic acne at the menopause may need isotretinoin oral therapy.

Hirsutism at the menopause

Facial hair tends to increase at the menopause, probably because of the more dominant role assumed by androgen in sensitive skin areas. Women with no previous problems may
suddenly sprout coarse hair from the chin and coarser hair on the upper lip. Eyebrows may thicken with the appearance of longer darker hairs. As in younger women, social conditioning will largely determine how well a woman is able to deal at the emotional level with this unwanted hair problem. Anti-androgen drugs can be used, with or without HRT, and the usual methods of camouflage and removal can be employed. Medications prescribed for various medical problems occasionally cause excess facial hair as an inconvenient
side effect-for example some drugs used to treat epilepsy.

Oral steroids in prolonged courses over many months or years can also cause facial hair but this is of a more diffuse and fine type (hypertrichosis rather than true hirsutism).

Today most of the Lavender oil sold in America is a hybrid called Lavandin, grown and distilled in China, Russia and Tasmania. It is brought into France, cut with synthetic linolyl acetate to improve the fragrance, added to propylene glycol or SD 40, DEP, and DOP (solvents that increase the volume), and then sold in the US as lavender oil.

Oftentimes Lavandin is heated to flash off the camphor, and then synthetic linolyl acetate is added so that it appears as lavender. Consumers do not know the difference and are happy to buy Lavandin for $5 to $7 per half ounce in health food stores, and through mail order.

These synthetic and adulterated oils can cause rashes, burns, or other irritations. We wonder why we do not get the benefits we were expecting and conclude that essential oils do not have much value. When synthetic fragrance constituents are added, the essential oil becomes weaker and weaker with each stage of distillation.

Many people have jumped on the bandwagon because of the money making potential they see in essential oils. They buy cheap oils, rebottle them, label them as 100 percent pure essential oils, and market them without ever knowing their origin or who was responsible for distillation.

It is critical to make sure you are using 100% therapeutic grade essential oils from a reputable company that you trust.

To ensure that you are getting therapeutic-grade essential oils, find a company that submits their oils for routine testing by independent laboratories and whose oils are from organic source, distilled without chemical solvents at minimum temperatures and pressures, and are bottled straight from the still with no alterations or adulterations.

To reduce or minimize the formation of scar tissue, massage Lavender oil on and around the affected area

Rub 2 to 4 drops of Lavender oil over the armpit area to act as a deodorant.

Rub a drop of Lavender oil between your palms and inhale deeply to help alleviate the symptoms of hay fever.

Rub several drops of Lavender oil into the scalp to help eliminate dandruff.

Place a few drops of Lavender oil on a cotton ball and place in your linen closet to scent the linens and repel moths and insects.

Place a drop of Lavender oil in your water fountain to scent the air, kill bacteria and prolong the time between cleanings.

Place a few drops of Lavender oil on a wet cloth and throw into the dryer, which will deodorize and freshen your laundry.

Put a drop of Lavender oil on a cold sore.

Diffuse Lavender oil to alleviate the symptoms of allergies.

Spritz several drops of Lavender oil mixed with distilled water on a sunburn to decrease pain.

Drop Lavender oil on a cut to clean the wound and kill bacteria.

Apply 2-3 drops of Lavender oil to a rash to stop the itching and heal the skin.

7. Chronic inflammation

V. Types of Conventional treatments
1. Metformin

Dexamethasone is a synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of steroid hormones and a prescribed medication for fertility but does not use frequently as the other medication. It helps to induce ovulation by suppressing the androgen levels, resulting in increasing the chance of fertility.
b) Side effects
i) Stomach upset
ii) Glucose intolerance
iii) Moodswing and irritability
iv) Depression
v) Water rentention
vi) Hypertension

6. Artificial Insemination (In Vitro Fertilization (IVF))
a) The effectiveness of IVF
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) may also be offered, if other medication treatment have failed to induce pregnancy for women with PCOS by using HCG or other medication to induce ovulation and egg retrieval.

b) Risks and side effects
a) Ovarian hyperstimulation

7. Surgery
Surgery is not commonly performed. If necessary, PCOs can be treated by either a laparoscopic surgery also is known as ovarian drilling or wedge resection. Alternatives to Hysterectomy

One of the most radical operations a woman can undergo is a hysterectomy. Every year up to 73,000 British women have their womb removed and also sometimes the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

The number of women having the surgery has dropped over the past five years. The figure used to be nearer 90,000 but Robin Parsons a specialist menopause nurse for the Amarant Trust – a research centre for women’s health issues – says times are changing. In the Eighties there were huge numbers of hysterectomies done in hospitals around the UK. Women today have more options.

Sometimes a woman may decide that a hysterectomy is the best way to solve problems such as heavy periods, endometriosis, fibroids and PMT. In some situations with cancer of the uterus for example – there’s little choice.

But its not an operation that can be undertaken lightly. You won’t be able to have any more children, You’ll need about 12 weeks off work and a full recovery can take up to two years. Some women experience depression or a reduced libido. If the ovaries are removed, it will result in the onset of the menopause, and women will usually need to go on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. One in 50 women experiences complications such as wound infections and there’s a death rate of 1 in 2000 – so its no surprise that many seek other surgical and drug based options. Linda Parkinson-Hardman, Director of The Hysterectomy Association says “there are alternatives – many women just aren’t aware of them”.

DIET

Linda suggests cutting down on meat to see if that helps relieve pain. “Meat tends to be full of hormones, antibiotics and some oestrogens which could make you more likely to suffer from endometriosis and fibroids”, she says.

DRUGS

* A low dose contraceptive pill can reduce bleeding in half of the women who try it.

* Tranexamic acid which is used to promote blood clotting can cut bleeding in 60% of cases, although pain is not reduced.

* Mefanamic acid, an inflammatory drug can reduce bleeding by 20% and ease period pain. But side effects include nausea, vomiting and kidney problems. These drug treatments will not affect your long term fertility.

* A new treatment called uterine artery embolisation can be used to treat fibroids. Small particles of a grainy type substance are passed into the arteries to block off the blood supply to the fibroids so they die or are reduced in size. The fibroids can shrink by 50% in three months.

Mirena Coil

Designed as a contraceptive, the Mirena Intrauterine System (IUS) or coil can also reduce heavy bleeding. It’s fitted by your GP and left in place. After three months use average blood loss is reduced by 85% and by 12 months the flow is reduced by 97% every cycle. About one third of women will have no periods at all, as the progesterone in the IUS prevents the lining of the womb from building up.

One study looked at 54 women with heavy periods who were awaiting a hysterectomy. After being fitted with the Mirena IUS, just under 70% were taken off the waiting list because they were so happy with the treatment.

Possible side effects include headache, water retention and breast tenderness. Pregnancy is rare, but if it does occur it is advisable to remove the contraceptive as soon as possible to reduce the risk of bleeding, infection or miscarriage.

SURGERY

Endometrial ablation – the womb lining is removed with lasers, electro-surgery or cryotherapy (freezing). It can be used to treat heavy bleeding, fibroids and polyps with a success rate of about 85%.

Balloon thermo ablation – a latex balloon containing a heating element is passed into the uterus and inflated with fluid. It then heats up, destroying the uterus lining. It reduces heavy periods in 85% of cases.

Myomectomy – the surgical removal of fibroids, leaving the uterus intact. This is best suited for small fibroids.

Laparoscopically assisted hysterectomy – a relatively new procedure the uses keyhole surgery to insert a small viewing instrument into the abdomen. The surgeon can then remove the uterus or ovaries if required through the vagina. The small incisions leave the woman with minimal scarring which should reduce recovery time to 6-8 weeks. But the operation takes longer to perform and there is a greater risk of complications. This method is not suitable for women with large fibroids or ovarian tumours.

Healthy Living & Prevention Tips

This category carries the lowest risk, and would be beneficial to anyone, including the menopausal woman. Obviously, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent menopause from occurring, but adopting a healthy lifestyle can do a lot to ease the transition into this new era.

  • A low-fat, high-fiber diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables will help maintain balance and help your body to resist those extra 10-15 pounds that often appear during menopause. Drinking lots of water will also help with dryness issues and keep you hydrated.
  • Specific foods that help to promote estrogen production are soy, beets, carrots, alfalfa, apples, cabbage and papaya. Eating these foods within a well-balanced diet can help with hot flashes and night sweats.
  • Exercise is key to a healthy routine. Walking, jogging, swimming or jumping rope are all simple exercises that cost little, if anything. Yoga and meditation are also excellent, and can help with depression and sleeplessness.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine as much as possible. If you smoke, stop.
  • Make sure that you are getting adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals in your diet, and/or supplements that you take. Vitamins B, C, D and E are especially important for good bone, skin, eye and brain health. Calcium is your best weapon against osteoporosis.
  • Try to consistently get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. This will ensure your overall well-being and help with memory problems, irritability and depression.

Treatment Options – Home and Herbal Remedies

When we look at this category, it seems easiest to divide the remedies into three groups: those that help with general aches and pains, those that help alleviate sexual dysfunction, and those that aid in dealing with memory problems and depression. The herbal remedies fall into two categories: non-estrogenic and phytoestrogens. Non-estrogenic herbs do not produce estrogen, but provide a supportive climate for hormonal glands so that they produce more estrogen. The phytoestrogens, like Black Cohosh, actually do produce estrogens.

Remedies for general aches and pains

By far, the most common complaint among menopausal women is hot flashes and/or night sweats. The drop in estrogen directly affects the hypothalamus, that area of the brain that controls body temperature.   • 3-4 gr of Chinese angelica tea (Dong quai)
  • Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C (broccoli, melons, berries, apricots, etc.)
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Wear cotton clothing to bed
  • Dress in layers
  • Use air conditioning in summer
  • Determine what triggers hot flashes and try to avoid (for example: alcohol, caffeine, etc.)
  • Drink a bottle of beer (The hops contain phytoestrogens)

Another common complaint during menopause involves sleep disorders, which generally translates into a lack of sleep. It is estimated that almost 60% of menopausal women experience insomnia at some point. Some of this may be due to the aforementioned hot flashes and night sweats, in which case some of the remedies for those things might help with the sleep issues. Apparently the fluctuations in hormone levels are what cause the sleeplessness—kind of like a ragtime band where one instrument hits a wrong note causing the entire band to be thrown off course.

Here are some remedies that can be effective when dealing with insomnia:

  • Try to keep as normal a sleep routine as possible. Rise and go to bed at the same time every day.
  • Keep the bedroom cool and dark.
  • Use your bed for sleeping, not watching television or playing video games.
  • Exercise as often as possible. Yoga is particularly effective in helping you to relax.
  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine and caffeine later in the day.
  • Eat a low-fat diet, and avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates late in the day.
  • Drink warm milk or chamomile tea before going to bed.
  • Dress in “cool” night clothes.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a serious disease that involves loss of bone mass. Because the bones are weakened, they become brittle and fractures may easily occur, sometimes affecting life style and life expectancy. Menopausal women are at increased risk for osteoporosis because they have stopped producing large amounts of estrogen, which protects the body from bone loss.

Preventive measures, or remedies to offset osteoporosis, should begin well before the onset of menopause. Taking 600 mg. of calcium with vitamin D twice a day, should probably begin when a woman enters her 40′s. Other remedies would include:

  • Exercising regularly. Weight-bearing exercise is particularly beneficial.
  • Not smoking, or stopping if you do.
  • Eating a balanced diet, rich in calcium and green, leafy vegetables.
  • Drinking alcohol not at all or in moderation.

Remedies for Sexual Dysfunction

One of the most debilitating effects of a lack of estrogen can be vaginal dryness. This can create a great deal of physical discomfort for a woman in a sexual relationship, as well as damage her self esteem. Hormonal changes can affect the walls of the vagina and the glands that provide lubrication, thus making intercourse a painful experience. Remedies for Depression and Memory Problems

There is little question that all of us experience stress in our daily lives, but when hormones fluctuate during menopause, it can seem overwhelming. It’s no wonder that some women may experience moments of forgetfulness and have difficulty concentrating. Today’s menopausal woman is often a member of the sandwich generation. This refers to raising your own children while taking care of aging parents. Sometimes this occurs in a subsequent fashion, sometimes at the exact same time, but whenever it happens, it certainly adds stress to your life. In addition to all the normal responsibilities that most women shoulder—taking care of family, housekeeping, cooking, working at a job outside the home, financial worries, etc., it is no wonder that many women become depressed when menopause comes along.

Some experts would argue that the following remedies for menopausal discomforts would fit better into the Home and Herbal category, or maybe not in any category at all! However, these practices have been found to be helpful in many instances in reference to pain and supporting emotional well-being. They include:

  • Massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Biofeedback
  • Hypnosis
  • Aromatherapy

The three categories that we have explored thus far—Healthy Living, Home and Herbal Remedies and Further Alternative Treatments, have almost no, or very little risk, and are relatively inexpensive. The final category, Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, will involve higher risks and greater costs.

Drug and Pharmaceutical Remedies

The most well-known treatment in this final categoy is HRT, or Hormone Replacement Therapy. This provides relief for almost all menopausal symptoms from hot flashes to depression and beyond. Generally speaking, women who have no uterus would be treated with estrogen, and women who still have a uterus would receive estrogen and progestins in a pill or patch form. This was pretty much the Utopia of menopause remedies, but unfortunately, it is now rarely used.

In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative of the National Institutes of Health completed a study that found that incidences of breast cancer, strokes and heart attacks increased in women that underwent this treatment. Secondary side effects included blood clots, urinary incentinence and gallstones. At this point, the Journal of the American Medical Association recommended that HRT be used for as little time as possible, if at all, in treating menopausal symptoms.

However, Estrogen creams and tablets like Estrace and Vagi-fem are often used to help relieve vaginal dryness and make intercourse more comfortable. Estring is a type of flexible ring that inserts into the vagina to dispense estrogen into the vaginal canal. These medications provide a low dose of estrogen, but it should be noted that some of it is absorbed systemically into other body cells.

Brand Name Drugs

There are now several drugs on the market that are used to treat osteoporosis. Some brand names are Fosamax and Boniva. These drugs are bisphosphonates, which help prevent the breakdown of bones, and thus help to strengthen them. Often they are taken along with calcium and vitamin D. Some side effects include diarrhea, joint pain, weakness and gastric upsets. Injections of these drugs are available for women with esophageal problems.

Menopausal symptoms can be treated with a variety of prescription drugs, some which may seem surprising, given the symptom. For example, Clonidine is usually used to treat high blood pressure, but has been found to be helpful in alleviating hot flashes. Some anti-depressants such as paroxetine and sertraline also make this claim, as does Gabapentin, an anti-seizure drug. And of course, there are many anti-depressants that can be prescribed for mood swings, anxiety and depression.

These drug and phamaceutical treatments carry a higher risk, and generally, come at a higher cost, than the remedies in the first 3 categories. Overall, the medical community seems to feel that a combination of remedies from these categories, using those with the highest risk sparingly, is the best approach to alleviating menopausal discomfort. Research continues in hopes of providing the means to a more comfortable menopausal experience for today’s woman.

Memory Loss And The Elusive Self

I have no fear of death, but I am deathly frightened of losing my mind and memory. The idea of being trapped in a stranger’s body, lost, adrift in thought and time is more than I can bear. Friends have laughed at my fear; they have countered with glib remarks: “At least you wouldn’t know you are in that condition. You would be so far gone in memory loss that you wouldn’t know your body is deteriorating. If you have no understanding of the nightmare, how can you be suffering?”

True enough. However, I am uneasy about such glib assumptions. The question nags at me still: is there any way the unconscious or subconscious body can know of its misplaced self ? Can someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s have an unconscious or subconscious awareness that his memory, his identity or sense of self has been lost in the shuffle?

So far, I have not come across in my readings a single suggestion that such possibility exists. There is a great deal of literature about unconscious or procedural memory which does not seem to have any relationship at all with an explicit sense of self. We have a vast reservoir of unconscious memories. Our body’s motor functions–getting up, going to the bathroom, walking, sleeping–are all made possible by unconscious or procedural memory–the memory of procedures and actions we need to do to sustain ourselves as living organisms. We do not have to remember to breathe because breathing is an unconscious process embedded in our cells. In this sense, there is no memory loss possible with unconscious memory unless the area of the brain that controls a specific action is damaged.

In a very real sense, we are made possible by procedural memory. There are everyday activities that we do which do not require reflection. Driving a car is a good example of implicit procedural memory. This sequence of action is so ingrained in our cells that the driving itself becomes automatic. These memories have been sandblasted into our limbic system. That’s why we never forget how to ride a bike even if there is a forty year lapse between our last bike ride and now.

Does unconscious procedural memory have an awareness of self? Daniel Schacter of the University of Arizona took a 58 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s to the golf course. The man could still hold his club correctly, tee up in the right spot and hit very well. These procedures have not abandoned his memory. However, he could not remember that he had taken a shot and started teeing off repeatedly. He could not keep score. By evening, his memory loss was so acute he could not even remember the afternoon’s events and even denied having played the game that day. His sense of an intact self going through the passage of the day is nonexistent. ( “Memory’s Ghost” Hilts 183)

One thing we do know–without memory of events, there is no self. We could not know who we were, who we are or who we want to be. Film-maker Luis Brunuel once wrote,” without [memory], we are nothing….we can only wait for the final amnesia, the one that can erase an entire life, as it did my mother.”

What we also know is that this sense of self is transient–it changes with our memories and despite the sense that there is something primordial and geological about memories, they are not indelible; they do fade and change over time. And in the same way, our subsequent sense of self flickers in and out of focus.

What all this means is that our sense of identity, sense of self is more a work of fiction than truth. It is not meant to be solid bedrock, more like sand on the bottom of the sea, re-composed repeatedly by currents and changing tides. Everything that we experience alters our brain in some form. A word, an event changes the circuitry of the brain. These are physical changes that make the idea of a fixed self very slippery.

If memories change, remembering is not retrieving an actual event from a vault; remembering is re-creating, re-writing the past in terms of the present. Wordsworth defines poetry as a “moment recollected in time”; and by doing so, he has made the present an inexorable part of the past. A remembering is an attempt to make sense of the past in the light of the present, or an attempt to make sense of the present in the light of the past. There can be no memory without at least a whiff of the self in the present. In its explicit and total erasure of events, time and place, memory loss from Alzheimer’s eliminates all traces of self.

And so my question is laid to rest, at least for now. Should I shuffle into old age, demented and forgetful, I need not fear the agony experienced by the unfortunate victims of Bells’ Palsy–a lucid mind trapped in a failing body, conscious all the way to the end of its present and former selves. There is, unfortunately here for these poor victims, no saving grace–like memory loss.

Spotting when you are in post menopause is absolutely a reason to consult your doctor, for this can be signs of something way more serious. This is especially true if you go from light spotting to actual heavy bleeding. Women who have had a history of ectopic pregnancy, tubal ligation, endometriosis, anovulation, thyroid disease, hyperandrogenism, hyperprolactinemia, polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD), premature menopause, insulin resistance, uterine fibroids or others are at risk for infertility.

Usually at the age of as early as the late 30′s to the late 50′s, women are prone to having their reproductive capabilities checked and halted with the onset of menopause. During this time, certain changes both internal and external occur both for the body and mind. Women are subjected to mood swings brought about by the fluctuating hormonal levels in the body. Coping strategies are compromised because of both lowered estrogen levels and altered feedback mechanisms.

Easier said than done, coping with it and having some tips on how to handle them may help one enjoy living through this stage in life without much complications.

Learn To Accept First

The very first thing that anyone should do is to learn to accept that having menopause occur to the self is a natural thing. Even if the normal norm for such a stimulus would be to deny then accept things, any woman has a lot of time to deny during normal reproductive days. By having to formally accept that this stage is bound to happen, the mind would be set to anticipate things associated with it such as the different signs and symptoms evident.

The refining and processing of the foods result in the destruction of the essential fatty acids and the formation of hydrogenated oils that contains harmful substances for example the trans fatty acids. Trans fatty acids preventes the normal absorption of the essential fatty acids and also causes damage to the arteries. Hydrogenated oils are found in margarine.

Deficiencies of essential fatty acids result in heart disease, diabetes and certain forms of cancer. Snoring, Sleep Apnea and Pcos

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common disorders of the female endocrine system. It is estimated that 5-10% of all women and as many as 17% of Hispanic women struggle with PCOS symptoms. Characterized by an abnormally high level of the male hormone, testosterone, irregular periods, infertility and insulin resistance, research is now showing that these hormone imbalances may also predispose women with PCOS to additional health problems (1).

One such problem is Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the involuntary closure of the upper airway which causes one to stop breathing while sleeping (2). Sufferers are typically not awakened by the repeated nightly episodes, but others awake with the experience of being choked or asphyxiated. Symptoms of Sleep Apnea include: chronic loud snoring, gasping/choking episodes during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness and personality changes (3).

In the past, excessive snoring and sputtering was fertile ground for jokes, but researchers have discovered that Sleep Apnea is no joking matter. Individuals with Sleep Apnea are three times more likely to be involved in motor vehicle accidents. They are less productive workers and can exhibit problems associated with poor memory and judgment. They are more likely to suffer depression and other psychiatric disorders and they are prone to a series of chronic diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, cancers and cardiovascular disease (4).

This connection between sleep disruption and chronic disease is being rigorously investigated. Science tells us that the true purpose of sleep is not entirely understood. It appears to fulfill certain important physiological functions such as restoration, neurological development and maintenance, memory consolidation, physical growth and maturation and immune system strengthening (5). Sleep is fundamental to the proper functioning of these systems (and likely others) which sustain our health and sense of well being. Sleep disruption can therefore, negatively affect and/or inhibit the most basic physiological functioning, causing a ripple-effect throughout the body.

Sleep Apnea, PCOS and Insulin Resistance

It is not surprising then, that researchers have discovered that Sleep Apnea may be connected to the same hormone imbalances within the endocrine system that result in other PCOS symptoms.

Studies show that women with PCOS have an exceptionally high risk of sleep apnea (6). Increased weight and obesity may play a significant role. High BMI (Body Mass Index) contributes to an insulin imbalance that results in a cascade of problems related to Insulin Resistance, the inability of the body to effectively process glucose. Because of a series of biochemical errors, insulin is unable to successfully bind to cells, inhibiting its ability to transfer glucose into those cells to be converted into energy. This causes a build up of both insulin and glucose in the blood that contributes to the accumulation of plaque in blood vessels.

Studies indicate that Insulin Resistance may be a stronger risk factor than excessive testosterone in the incidence of PCOS. In a controlled study, women with PCOS were 30 times more likely to suffer from sleep disordered breathing and reported higher frequencies of daytime sleepiness than the control group.

Researchers also found that while testosterone levels between the two groups were comparable; their fasting plasma insulin levels were significantly higher, indicating that sleep apnea might reflect an insulin-related endocrine abnormality (7). These findings further confirm the link between PCOS, Insulin Resistance and higher incidences of diabetic conditions.

testosterone and Vascular Issues

Elevated testosterone, a commonly-presented symptom of PCOS is also linked to vascular problems. According to some research, excess testosterone contributed to the development of a thickened carotid artery and larger neck present in many women with PCOS, suggesting that the “masculinizing” effect of testosterone affects the physiology of the breathing mechanism; a reasonable assumption since the predominance of Sleep Apnea sufferers are male until post-menopausal women start to statistically catch up (8). Other researchers point to the connection between Insulin Resistance and the thickening of vascular walls. Both situations are harbingers of serious cardiovascular disease and should prompt quick action.

Treatment

Treatment for Sleep Apnea in PCOS individuals should be administered by a responsible healthcare professional that is thoroughly familiar with both the complexities of PCOS and the overlapping conditions indicated by the presence of Sleep Apnea. And while there are prescriptions available that address the list of symptoms, the most important thing a woman with PCOS could do on their own is to make substantive changes to her diet, nutrition and activity levels.

As in non-PCOS individuals, weight loss, nutritional supplementation and exercise can change the biochemistry of the body, helping to bring it into balance. With weight loss due to a low carbohydrate diet, Insulin Resistance becomes less of a problem, hormone levels start to even out, cardiovascular risk starts to drop and energy starts to increase. Perhaps more importantly, however, is the soaring sense of self esteem that comes from taking control of one’s own health.

During the Perimenopausal Passage many body systems require special care and support.

Immune functions -Supporting the immune functions buffers against the possible weakening effects of long-term grief on immunity. Women may experience this long-term grief reaction strongly or more subtly as a response to a perceived loss in menstruation or in response to the approach of menopause. Furthermore, it is important to support immune functions because of the possibility that estrogen may make a women’s immune responses so sensitive that they attack her own body tissues.

Pituitary – The pituitary assists in stimulating all the glands of the body and releases FSH and LH. FSH and LH act directly on the ovaries to promote the development and enlargement of the follicles. In the post-menopausal years, the pituitary is responsible for secreting higher levels of FSH and LH. This post-menopausal increased production of FSH and LH results in more consistently elevated brain levels of these two hormones. Some think that these elevated brain levels of FSH and LH acting as neurotransmitters in the brain may be the mechanisms for the increased intuitiveness and awareness of post- menopausal women.

Adrenal glands – In the menopausal years the adrenal glands are important for balanced energy production and for the production of small amounts of testosterone from a precursor hormone called adrostenedione. The secretion of these small amounts of androgens (testosterone being one hormone from this class of hormones) help maintain the female sex drive, build bone and muscle strength and increase vaginal lubrication and elasticity. Androgens promote general well-being for the rest of a women?s life. The production of testosterone is thought by some to facilitate the developing assertiveness in post-menopausal women.

Pancreas – is responsible for the production of balanced sugar levels that may become unbalanced by loss of estrogen. Frequent and rapid changes in blood sugar may play havoc with emotional responses.

Nervous system – The nervous system may need extra support in order to cope with and compensate for the effects of all the hormonal revamping that occurs in menopause.

Brain functions – Memory, concentration, and attention functions may become unbalanced by the changes in hormone levels.

Liver – During the perimenopausal years it is important that the liver is strong and healthy so that it can metabolize and break down estrogen and its by-products. The liver is responsible for transforming the main type of estrogen, called estradiol, into other forms of estrogen. Estradiol in too high amounts or for too prolonged a period of time may be carcinogenic. The liver prevents excessive build-up of estradiol in the blood circulation by inactivating it. When the liver is healthy the conversion of estradiol occurs quite efficiently.

Digestive processes – Poorly functioning digestion stimulates the growth of certain types of bacteria in the intestinal tract. These bacteria chemically change the breakdown products of estrogen into forms that can be reabsorbed back into the body. This elevates the levels of estrone and estradiol in the bloodstream. These elevated levels of estrone and estradiol may be carcinogenic to certain sensitive tissue such as breast, ovarian, and uterine tissue.

Bone cell growth – Maintenance of adequate bone cell growth protects against the development of osteoporosis.

Cardiovascular functions – The decline of estrogen may increase the stress on the cardiovascular functions resulting in increased heart attacks, higher cholesterol levels, and stroke in the menopausal years.

Thyroid – A well-functioning thyroid helps in lessening the severity, frequency, and duration of hot flashes. Healthy thyroid functioning reduces osteoporosis risk and the frequency of numb and cramping legs and feet. A healthy thyroid also reduces edema.

Are There Really 34 Different Menopause Symptoms?

Are you one of the 70% of women approaching menopause? When a woman’s hormonal levels change in the reproductive system they typically have hot flashes and nights sweats as well as mood swings and sudden tears. Most women while still having their periods notice that they are having symptoms of menopause. At this stage a woman is in perimenopause and usually begins during their early 40′s.

Menopause itself when in full swing or transition lasts until they are in their mid fifties. Yet some women will experience this for the rest of their lives. Most of your common symptoms are hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, irregular periods, and loss of libido.

Today I am going to give you some useful and important information on menopause symptoms.

Hot/Cold Flashes

Between 70 to 85% of all women will more than likely to get hot flashes. Hot flashes are usually suddenly felt and gives you a warm sensation that spreads throughout your body     giving you a feeling of flushing redness that is noticeable on the face and upper body. Hot flashes can be a delicate feeling or an engulfing flaming feeling. This is a very normal part of menopause. Hot flashes are when a body reacts to the supply of hormone estrogen decreasing. Not all women have hot flashes, yet more than half will.

Nights Sweats

A relative of hot flashes is what is called evening night sweats. These sweats are more intense. What some may think is a sleep disorder isn’t, but a common perspiration disorder that happens when you are sleeping.

Irregular Periods

Hormonal imbalances are usually the cause of absent, short, and irregular periods. Most women will have these symptoms during their lives. You will have your periods sooner then normal and even later then usual and may only last a few days and in some cases longer then you are use to. Sometimes you may skip a month and then go back to normal for a few months to find out that you may not have another period for 2 to 3 months later. These irregularities are most common during your mid forties while approaching your menopause. The cause of this is hormonal imbalances and estrogen production.

Loss of Libido

This is an issue when desire becomes less than normal between couples and most sex therapists will tell you that is should only be addressed when it becomes a problem between the couple. We all experience ups and down in our sexual desire, but during this period of menopause it can become a problem do to lack of intimacy. One must also know when the difference is sexual drive and sexual function and treat them as such.

Vaginal Dryness

When a woman’s estrogen levels drop her usual moist and soft feel of the vaginal area may become itchy and irritable and start to dry as well as become less elastic. She will become more prone to infections not to mention uncomfortable while love making. This also occurs because of estrogen levels drop.

Mood Swing and Sudden Tears

Because of all these problems are going on at one time it will make a woman’s attitude go from happy go lucky to mean and irrational and out of control. This is normal and can be treated so you should talk to your doctor and get more advice.

Fatigue

Fatigue symptoms are the second most common symptom that doctors will diagnose in a patient. This will have a major impact when it comes to your daily life and cause strain on your relationship, work environment as well as your all around quality of life. When you have a lack of energy and feel weak and tired with low energy and wanting to sleep a lot on an ongoing bases you are within the lines of fatigue. These are the most common of menopause symptoms.

Most people know that these symptoms are related to menopause but here are some symptoms that are not so well known and should be thought of as well as talk about with your doctor just to be sure that these symptoms are not the cause of something more serious than menopause.

One thing bipolar patients have in common is that they take heavy medications, particularly antidepressants that have many side effects. To whatever question you ask these patients, the answer will often be, “Well, I have bipolar.” As if this one sad fact is sufficient explanation for all possible questions.

But the word “bipolar”, of course, does not explain everything, and this is particularly true for women having problems with hormonal changes. For example, one woman had a hysterectomy because of severe bleeding, then had to go on hormone replacement therapy. After a couple of months she completely “lost it”. She became convinced that she had to move far, far away and take up missionary work – to the alarm of her concerned family. Bingo. Menopause is a natural, and unfortunately, an unavoidable part of aging.  As an important stage of a woman’s reproductive cycle, the symptoms of menopause need not interfere with your quality of life.

When a woman reaches menopause, (also known as “going through the change of life”) the ovaries begin producing less estrogen.  Menstrual periods become increasingly irregular, then stop entirely.  This generally occurs in women between the ages of forty five and fifty five. 

It is not uncommon to experience irregular periods for 5 to 7 years before your cycle stops completely.  After going one full year without menstrual periods a women is considered to have passed through menopause.

Menopause symptoms occur in response to changes in estrogen and progesterone levels in the body.  Symptoms may include anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry skin, hair loss, hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, low libido, mood swings, nausea, night sweats and vaginal dryness.  The lack of estrogen may have other consequences too; such as, increased risk for heart disease and osteoporosis.

Hot flashes occur when the estrogen levels drop and typically begin in the chest and spreads to the neck, face and arms.  They can be accompanied by sweating, heart palpitations and maybe followed by chills.

If menstruation stops suddenly, either naturally or following the surgical removal of the ovaries, the discomforts of menopause can be especially severe.  What ever the cause, supplements and natural remedies can be very useful in treating the symptoms of menopause.

Menopause is not a medical condition requiring drugs, but if mental or physical symptoms are severe, you should consult a physician.  Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be prescribed.  Beware of the possible negative side effects; such as, elevated blood pressure, migraine headaches, gallstones, breast cancer or cancer of the uterus and more.

Many women prefer to avoid the potential risks of HRT and utilize self-help techniques to control menopause.  For some women, natural estrogen is more successful than HRT.

Supplements and natural remedies

Black cohosh contains key ingredients that act on the hypothalamus and thermoregulatory center of the brain to simulate the effects of estrogen.  It effectively treats loss of libido, hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness and other menopausal symptoms.   Improvements are generally seen in 4 to 8 weeks.  Commercial products are available; follow packaging directions.

Chaste berry (for irregular periods) helps balance estrogen and progesterone by affecting the part of the brain that controls the release of these two hormones.  Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams daily.  Commercially prepared tinctures are available; follow packaging directions.

Vitamin E helps eliminate hot flashes.  Take 400 IU to 600 IU daily.  Do not expect immediate results, it takes 2 to 4 weeks to feel the effects.

Selenium amplifies the action of vitamin E and is linked to normal hormone balance.  Take 100 to 200 micrograms daily.

Soy and foods rich in soy protein contain phytoestrogens, or molecules very similar to estrogen and progesterone.  A menopausal women can retain the benefits she had previously received from her body’s natural estrogen by eating lots of soy protein.  Try to consume 25 grams of soy daily.  Powered soy supplements are available; follow packaging directions.

Calcium helps relieve irritability and nervousness.  Additionally, it helps guard against osteoporosis, which begins at menopause.  Take 1,500 milligrams daily in divided doses.

Fenugreek contains diosgenin, a compound similar to the hormone estrogen.  It is often used in the treatment of depression associated with menopause and hot flashes.  It may also reduce cholesterol levels.  Fenugreek tea and commercial products are available; follow packaging directions.

Evening primrose oil helps in the production of estrogen and relieves hot flashes.  Take 500 milligrams twice a day.

Dong quai may offer steady, lasting relief for women who have difficult periods and who are battling through menopause.  It also appears to help women feel more energetic.  Commercial products are available; follow packaging directions.

Other herbs that either provide natural estrogen or stimulate the body’s production of estrogenic hormones include alfalfa, blessed thistle, blue cohosh, cramp bark, damiana, gotu kola, licorice root, red raspberry leaf, sarsaparilla, unicorn root and yarrow.
