When a woman suspects she may be experiencing the first symptoms of menopause this will usually cause her to begin some personal research. This is what I did, casually at the beginning. One of the first articles I read, in on of the many women’s magazines available today, suggested talking to your mother. I was 50 years old when I thought that I may be beginning this phase of life. My mother had passed away a few years earlier. So I was not able to have a conversation with her about this topic. Generally a mother and daughter will have very similar experiences with their menstrual cycles. 1. Fire Prevention. Start with turning your thermostat down. If family members or co-workers complain, try wearing lighter weight clothing made of 100% cotton. Cotton allows your body to breathe, letting the heat out and cooling you down faster.

2. Keep Your Cool. Research conducted on the brain indicates that stress is a major contributor to hot flashes. According to one recent study, stress causes the brain to release a chemical that stimulates the part of the brain regulating your temperature.
Health practitioners recommend daily stress reduction exercises such as meditation, yoga, massage, and breathing exercises. As a matter of fact, according to Sadja Greenwood, M.D., assistant clinical professor of gynecology at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, women who practice deep, slow, controlled breathing have fewer and less severe hot flashes than those who don’t.
3. Beat the Heat. Daily aerobic exercise will keep you ahead of your hot flashes — as well as keeping you healthy and fit. Regular 30-minute workouts release endorphins; hormones which tend to diminish in women as estrogen decreases.
Dr. Timothy Yeko, an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida suggests that an increase in endorphins helps to reduce the frequency of hot flashes and elevate good feelings. Just be careful not to exercise right before bed, because it could bring on a case of night sweats.
4. Extinguish the Burn with Foods and Supplements. Taking away some of the diet triggers such as caffeine, chocolate, and alcohol and adding soothing foods, vitamins, and herbs to your diet could help tame 3-alarm hot flashes.
Research has shown that eating foods made from soy products, such as soymilk, whole soybeans, tofu, and miso have reduced hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms greatly. Soy and other plants types contain isoflavones, an estrogen-like compound.
Adding Vitamin E has also been shown to help reduce hot flash frequency and severity. It can be found in wheat germ, wheat germ oil, safflower oil, whole-grain breads and cereals, peanuts, walnuts, filberts and almonds.

Hot flashes may seem relatively harmless, but when you consider that they can actually cause insomnia for a lot of women, you start to realise just how debilitating they can be if left unchecked. So we know insomnia and hot flashes have been with is for centuries, but it seems to have escalated dramatically just recently during the last few years. Many people believe it to be related to the HRT scare that was publicized a few years back – where the clinical trials suggested that the risks of using hormone replacement therapy greatly outnumbered the benefits.

It’s well known that as we get older, our sleeping patterns and habits go through changes. We tend to spend more time in the first two stages of sleep. Stage one is called transitional sleep, and stage two is light sleep. Both are non rapid eye movement (NREM) stages of sleep.
The deep sleep comes in stages three and four, which are also known as Delta sleep patterns. These stages are where we get the most benefit. They are deep states of sleep were we are totally unconscious and fully "under". Stage five is also called REM or Rapid Eye Movement sleep, which is where we dream.
As we get older, typically into our fifties, we tend to spend more of our sleep time in stages one and two, with the obvious consequences – sleeping lighter and more prone to be woken up. So we get tired earlier in the day, and tend to wake earlier in the morning. But there are always options open to us to enhance our sleep time, not matter how bad it has got.
First task on the list to figure out where we are having problems and what is causing the disruption to our sleep process. Do you have difficulty falling asleep, or do you drift off easily only to wake up soon afterwards. Are you continually wakening during the night, or just wake to early in the morning? Are the hot flashes causing you to wake suddenly, or do you experience one almost immediately you awaken?

Some herbal products might be beneficial. Some specific herbal menopause remedies could be the answer, or over-the-counter sleep aids might help for awhile, but don’t rely on the sleep aids too much – it’s never that simple. You’ve waited for this evening for weeks. Finally you and your husband have the time and a few dollars to go out for the night to spend some romantic time together. The grown kids are now gone off to college, married, or are chasing their promising career and the house is essentially empty. No longer do you hear the calls of, "Mom, I can’t find my…", "Did you wash my…", or "What’s for supper? I’m starved!" Those days are gone.
Instead you hear the phone ring or once in awhile, the door bursts open without a knock and your tiny, precious baby now stands there tall and strong with the grin you’ve loved for years and a black garbage bag full of dirty laundry. No, you’ll never stop being ‘Mom’, but the role of ‘Mom’ has now changed. However, for tonight, you are Mrs. Romantically Female; an actual woman again.
As you look in the mirror, the maturity of all the things you’ve experienced for the past decades is evident; the long nights with sick kids, the rushing to sports’ events and concerts, the tedious jobs of folding clothes and cooking meals.
You slip on that special pink dress and maybe even don a pair of heels if they still fit. The hairdo has to be just right so after every hair is in place you spray it lightly. You put on your foundation, shadow, eyeliner and mascara. Then you add just a touch of blush to brighten the now slightly sunken cheeks. As you’re applying the final touch of lipstick, it hits.
That dreaded hot flash! As you begin to feel your insides heat up you start fanning yourself trying to cool off before the well-known affects of the last hour’s hard work begin to cause a meltdown. Your deodorant kicks into second gear; and then third; as the perspiration begins to run between your breasts at an alarming rate.
The temperature rises as the beads of sweat try to seep from under your make-up. You can feel the evaporation from your hairline, and under your nose, and you dab at it with a tissue hoping to head off the inevitable while still keeping collateral damage to a minimum.

Now you try to hold back the tears so you can salvage what’s left of the make-up, change into something more casual… that’s not sweat laden… in darker colors… and replace the nylons and heels with socks and sneakers.
Deciding that a burger and fries tastes just as good as lobster and salad, you pull yourself together and announce to your husband maybe a more casual evening like a movie and McDonalds would actually save money anyway.
Don’t despair. Any woman who’s going through menopause has been there. Just when you think you can begin to have a life of your own, now that the kids are old enough to fend for themselves, you begin turning the corner into "older" age and the hot flashes (or "flushes" as they’re also referred to) remind you of your more mature age.

There is also a new treatment that comes in the form of a gel and it’s called "Low-dose Transdermal Estradiol (E2) Gel". Ronald Ackerman, MD., the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of Comprehensive Clinical Trials in West Palm Beach, Florida is quoted as saying, "The treatment goal is to provide the least amount of estrogen over the least amount of time which can be effective for the individual patient. Transdermal is a growing trend owing to its ability to bypass the liver and be given at lower doses."
The testing of Transdermal was done on 488 women between the ages of 18 to 65 who experienced more than 50 hot flashes per week, regardless of whether the flashes were due to age or other medical factors such as a hysterectomy. After twelve weeks of applying the gel alternately to each thigh, 92% of the tested women reported that their hot flashes were now mild to moderate, with the more adverse symptoms being experienced by only those who were being treated with the higher doses.
The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) suggests that Low-dose Transdermal Estradiol just may be an alternative to the traditional hormone replacement therapy.
Because many women have a fear of cancer and heart disease from the widely taken medications known as Prempro and Premarin, a new pill has been developed and is being tested. This most recent menopause pill is a combination of bone-loss therapy and estrogen and in recent studies Aprela is boasted to have reduced hot flashes from 80%.
The parent company Wyeth also reports that Aprela should be available in about a year, provided it passes the testing and is approved.
So, in the meantime, keep your tank top and your sweater handy for the thirty second temperature explosions followed by the cold chill three minutes later. Carry an extra roll-on deodorant and can of hairspray in your purse, keep cotton swabs handy for make-up touchups, and put a smile on your face. After all, the kids are still on their own, you can come and go as you please without first getting a sitter, the food bill has diminished significantly, and you have some wonderful memories that came with every one those laugh lines.

Researchers in India find that doing yoga meditation eases the symptoms of the menopausal years.
Women in the United States spend billions of dollars every year seeking relief for the symptoms of menopause. Common menopausal issues include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, decreased libido, vaginal dryness, and fatigue.
Not a lot of fun - it’s no wonder women are putting so much money into treatments.
Hormone-replacement therapy alone costs American women about $3.2 billion per year, and that does not include alternative products like soy or herbal remedies. Hormone replacement remains a controversial issue, with claims that it increases women’s chances of getting certain types of cancer.
Because of the cost and the potential health risks, many women seek less intensive methods for relief .
A new study from researchers in India may provide some reassurance, showing that yoga meditation successfully eased menopausal symptoms in a group of women who took an eight-week course.
Dr. R. Chattha, from the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana in Bangalore, India, and his research partners conducted a study involving 120 women age 40-55 who were experiencing menopausal symptoms.
The women were divided into two groups, with one group undergoing an eight-week session of yoga meditation while the other group received training on exercise and nutrition.
The yoga group participated in classes of meditative postures and breathing, and attended lectures about yoga’s abilities to achieve a mastery of mind over physical issues. The focus in the yoga sessions was to achieve a meditative state, and "slow the rate of thoughts in the mind," according to the researchers.
The second group was encouraged to engage in mild exercise and attend lectures on physiology and diet.
After eight weeks, the yoga meditation group showed significant improvements in their major menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, and night sweats, while the exercise group did not.
And while both groups scored well on a test of memory and cognition, the yoga group again outperformed the other group significantly in seven out of ten cognition subtests.
This is good news for women who also report feeling "foggy" at times during menopause, and possibly for aging adults in general.
In fact, the study’s results bode well for women who want to manage their menopausal symptoms but are leery of taking expensive synthetic hormones that may cause health problems of their own.
Said Dr. Chattha to reporters, "The present study shows the superiority of yoga over physical activity in improving the cognitive functions that could be attributed to emphasis on correctness in breathing, synchronizing breathing with body movements, relaxation and mindful rest."
